Religion in West Pakistan’s districts, 1941

Region
Pakistan, 1941
Data
Census of India 1941, Imperial Table XIII (Community), Punjab, NWFP, Sind and Baluchistan volumes.
Rule
Districts shaded by the share of people not Muslim, in the colour of the largest other religion (Hindu, Sikh or Christian). Units are 1941 districts and states, drawn on 1951 boundaries grouped as in 1941 so both censuses cover the same ground; tribal areas, not counted by religion in 1941, are hatched.

The 1941 census, the last before Partition, counted 26.1 million people in the districts and states that became West Pakistan. 76.9% were Muslim, 14.9% Hindu, 6.3% Sikh and 1.7% Christian. Every district had a Muslim majority, but the minorities were large and concentrated. In the canal colonies and districts of central Punjab (Lahore, Lyallpur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Montgomery) roughly 30% to 40% of the people were Hindus or Sikhs, with Sikhs the larger group in Lahore, Lyallpur and Sheikhupura. In Sind, Hindus were a third of the people of Karachi and Hyderabad districts and 43% in Thar Parkar, which was only just Muslim-majority (50.3%). Each district is shaded by the share of its people who were not Muslim, in the colour of the largest other religion.

The units are 1941 districts and states, grouped so that the 1951 census covers the same ground: Karachi includes Thatta, Sialkot includes Shakargarh tehsil (part of Gurdaspur in 1941), Sibi includes Bolan and the Marri-Bugti country, Kalat includes Makran, and Bahawalpur covers both of its 1951 districts. The tribal agencies and the states of Chitral, Dir and Swat were not counted by religion in 1941 and are hatched. Lahore’s 1941 figure includes the strip of Kasur tehsil that went to India. Boundaries are the 1951 districts, rebuilt from present-day tehsils and grouped as in 1941.

After Partition, the same districts in 1951: map 21b.

Map: Religion in West Pakistan’s districts, 1941. Before Partition: 23% of the people in the districts that became West Pakistan were not Muslim, over a third in central Punjab, Karachi and lower Sind.
