Cantonments of India

India has 61 notified cantonments, run by cantonment boards under the Directorate General Defence Estates and grouped here by the Army command each falls under (filled squares). Most are colonial-era garrison towns, from hill stations in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to Secunderabad, Pune and Mhow. Since 2023 the government has been moving to hand the civil areas of cantonments to the neighbouring municipalities and keep only the military areas as military stations. Sixteen, in amber, have excision plans under way: ten in a 2024 Ministry of Defence draft notification and six in Himachal Pradesh awaiting the state’s consent; none had been completed by October 2026. Many large Army bases are not cantonments at all but military stations, set up by executive order with no civil population or board, though they are often called cantonments: 42 of them from Wikipedia’s list, such as Udhampur, Mamun, Bathinda, Jodhpur and Binnaguri, are drawn hollow, with 13 more named as military stations in news and official sources, among them Gorakhpur, Leh, Rangapahar, Fort William and Kibithu, and Khas Yol, which became a military station when it was denotified in 2023. Each square sits at the cantonment area where GeoNames or OpenStreetMap has one, otherwise at its town. Punjab and Jammu, the Punjab hills and Uttarakhand, Pune and Darjeeling are drawn again at a larger scale.
